Montpellier is set to accelerate the energy transition of the city's vehicle fleet. The city is in the process of becoming a ZFE (Zone à Faibles Emissions), the most polluting vehicles will no longer be allowed in the city from July 1, 2022, until 2028. The aim of this measure is to improve air quality and reduce CO2 emissions across the whole of France.
Montpellier is the second city in Occitanie to be affected by these measures, along with Toulouse. As of July 1, 11 communes in the Montpellier metropolitan area will be introducing the EPZ, including :
- Saint Jean de Védas
- Le Crès
- Lattes
- Castelnau-le-Lez
- Grabels
- Clapiers
- Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone
- Jacou
- Juvignac
- Pérols
- And of course Montpellier
As the most polluting vehicles gradually disappear, the city and its inhabitants will have to find solutions. To install a charging stationis very simple! All you need to do is analyze your needs and behavior. If you're a business or a public institution, you may have a high demand for recharging. For this reason, opt for fast charging stations or even accelerated charging stations, depending on the number of vehicles you receive each day. The higher the power output of your charging station, the more efficient it will be at recharging. In other words, your charging station will be able to accommodate more vehicles at a time.
For private customersDepending on the power delivered by your home, we recommend installing a charging station with a power rating of between 7.4 kW and 11 kW, combined with a load-shedding option. This option will cut power to the bollard if it consumes more energy than your home can deliver.
To choose your installer, there are virtually no criteria other than IRVE ! In fact, your choice should be based on the installer's technical expertise. That's what IRVE certification is for! It guarantees that the installer has been trained and approved by the government to install a charge point. Not to mention that IRVE certification is mandatory if you are eligible for the ADVENIR and wish to join the program.

Montpellier and the Occitanie region have set up a scheme to support the installation of 100 two-way charging stations.. As the name suggests, the aim of the scheme is to install 100 two-way charging stations to supply professional electric vehicle fleets.
What is a bidirectional charging station?
A bi-directional charging station is one that not only charges your vehicle, but also recovers energy from your vehicle. The vehicle owner can earn money by selling his or her electricity back to the recharging network.
The following are eligible for assistance:
- the companies
- local authorities
- public institutions
- associations
- social landlords
As you can see, private individuals are not eligible for this scheme.
It is important to note that conventional charging stations are not eligible for the scheme.
To access this assistance, please provide the following documents:
- the documents required by the regional funding management regulations
- receipted invoices for equipment and work relating to the subsidy object
- photographs of installed terminals
Finding a charging station in Montpellier is easy! All you need is one of the applications that list charging stations. We list them below:
- ChargeMap ChargeMap: is an interactive map listing most of the charging points available on European roads! It has been specially designed for electric vehicle users. It enables users of these vehicles to plan their journeys in the best possible way, and to add charging stations themselves that the application would not have referenced on its own. This last option is very practical if you want to reference your establishment on the map thanks to the charging stations you've installed.
- Google Maps: it's not the most familiar feature to the general public, but the Google giant's application lets you locate nearby charging stations! All you have to do is set your filters and you're ready to go!
- Plugshare with the same principle as ChargeMapPlugshare shows the position of charging stations indicated by its users all over the world. It's a very practical application if you're a frequent and long-distance traveler!
Since 2018, Montpellier has been investing heavily in its network of charging stations to make life easier for citizens who have acquired electric vehicles. More than 410 charging stations have been installed in Montpellier and its suburbs. Of these, the charging stations belonging to the city's network are powered by guaranteed renewable electricity from nearby hydroelectric dams.
Montpellier wants to play a full part in the collective effort to decarbonize the French car fleet and adopt more environmentally-friendly lifestyles.
These charging stations also include numerous accelerated charging stations delivering no less than 11 to 22 kW, as well as fast charging stations providing up to more than 100 kW.
It's easy to find them: you can of course use the applications described above, but Montpellier has also set its sights on a number of strategic locations:
- fast-charging stations in the vicinity of City Hall
- accelerated charging stations at multimodal hubs (Saint-Roch, Sud de France, Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone, Baillargues).
- Accelerated terminals are also available in all business parks.
- Finally, you're likely to come across high-speed terminals (between 7.4 and 11 kW) in tramway and park-and-ride parking lots.
On average, recharging an electric vehicle for 100 km costs €3, compared with €8 for internal combustion vehicles. Subscribers RÉVÉO subscribers will pay €1.5 per hour, plus a €2 connection fee, to recharge at one of the charging stations available in the city. The cost of an annual subscription is €12.
The network is still accessible to users without a subscription, albeit at a much higher charging rate. Connection costs between €3 and €4, depending on the type of terminal, and recharging costs €4 an hour.
There are plenty of free charging stations in Montpellier! It's very easy to find them: just go to applications such as Chargemapor PlugShare. They'll let you filter the charging stations where you can recharge for free!
We recommend walking around shopping mall parking lots, restaurants and hotels to maximize your chances of finding them, even if they're not listed.
The Occitanie region as a whole boasts over 671 free recharging points, including more than 75 in Montpellier alone!
There are also more than 23 in Nîmes, 23 in Agde, 12 in Marseillan and 11 in Servian.
