Are the French in favour of electric cars?

Français favorable véhicule électrique

While the climate sounds the alarmIt's high time we took action. In addition to the measures put in place in several French cities, including the ZFE (Low Emission Zone)the European Parliament voted in favour of thea total ban on sales of new combustion-powered cars by 2035. To achieve this, the solution for reducing gas emissions would be to opt for a electric vehicle.

But there is one question: with prices soaring, Does this mean that the French are in favour of electric cars? Let's find out together.

What will the automotive market look like in 2022?

According to ACEA figuresFor the first time in 15 months, the French car market seems to be picking up again. The survey shows an increase of 3.8 % in August 2022This contrasts with July, when results were in the red.

This slight increase shows that the French are once again ready to buy new cars, which is good news for the automotive market. However, motorists are paying more and more attention to the future vehicle they would like to own, and are more attracted to electric vehicles. This comes as no great surprise, since the current environmental challenges are significant and that the government is encouraging all motorists to make the energy transition with, in particular, the support for the purchase of electric vehicles : environmental bonus or the conversion premium.

What are the French saying about electric vehicles in 2022?

To better understand the current and future needs and benefits of French motorists, on 15 September 2022, Ipsos and Vinci Automobile carry out a survey on electromobility. The survey was carried out on a panel of 1,000 people and 250 electric vehicle drivers. Here are a few figures:

  • 1 in 5 French people, i.e. 80 %, plan to buy an electric vehicle in the next 5 years
  • 6 out of 10 French people consider electric vehicles to be suitable for their journeys.

So we can see that the French are generally in favour of electric mobility, despite the fact that some of them are more reluctant to buy an electric vehicle.

Simply compare and find the vehicle that's right for you

What about electric car owners?

For drivers already using an electric vehicle, 91 % are satisfied of their purchase, or even 55 % are very satisfied and no longer wish to return to combustion-powered vehicles. This satisfaction is linked to the environmental, economic and comfort benefits, in particular :

  • make an active contribution to the ecological transition
  • the comfort that electric vehicles could bring to drivers and passengers, such as the absence of noise
  • be able to recharge their vehicle at any location: even if the current number of recharging points is still insufficient, drivers can recharge their vehicle from home by installing a charging point. It also saves time and is more practical for them.
  • the cost of maintaining an electric vehicle is less important than a thermal vehicleThis is mainly due to the small number of technical parts in the vehicle.

In conclusion

As we have just seen, more and more French people are beginning to realise that beyond the sale price, the electric vehicles are economic, environmental and, above all, comfort benefits.

Finally, motorists are increasingly seeing electric vehicles in a new light. So we can say that, yes, the French do see electric vehicles as a better way of getting around.
