Dacia Spring electric: the low-cost electric car?

Dacia Spring VE low cost

electric car low-cost: is it possible? Can we break the €20,000 barrier? That's the challenge facing the electric Dacia Spring, which is aiming to revolutionise the car market. electric car with its model due for release in the first half of 2021.

The electric revolution is underway, and manufacturers of low-cost vehicles have no intention of missing out on this opportunity. Dacia is proof of this with its Spring Electric Concept, a small elevated vehicle that should be equipped with a small electric motor. L'autonomy is the only element of which we have virtual certainty, with 200 km in the WLTP cycle announced by the Franco-Romanian brand. The Dacia Spring electric has already been presented as "Europe's most affordable 100 % electric car".

The rules on pollution are set to intensify in Europe, with all manufacturers set to comply with less than 95 g/km of CO CO2 in 2021. And it is clear that no one has reached this barrier. Brands are therefore under threat of penalties from the EU for non-compliance. The solution? Offer electric and hybrid cars to their customers. Dacia, for example, has to offset the CO2 emissions of the DusterThis is all the more important given that this model is a success, and therefore has a negative impact on the carbon footprint of the brand and the Group.

Compare the Dacia Spring vs Reault 5 E-Techin our electric car comparison tool

Dacia, simple pleasure

Why make things complicated when you can make them simple? Dacia's philosophy is to offer a range of attractive, quality vehicles at the best possible price. Today, Duster and Sandero are emblematic models of the brand. The Dacia range, based on a smart approach, aims for simplicity and pleasure. Dacia is in step with the times.

The Dacia brand was created in 1966 in Romania. The brand's mission is to provide all Romanians with modern, robust family cars.

Dacia joins the Renault family

In 1999, the brand was acquired by the French brand Renault which modernised the historic Pitesti plant. A breakthrough was made in terms of quality. The difficult Romanian climate, the poor state of the roads and the long distances across the Carpathian mountain range demanded vehicles of exemplary reliability.

In 2004, Dacia launched the family hatchback " Logan "This was the symbol of the brand's revival, and it broke all production records the following year.

In 2011, Dacia will win over 340,000 new customers in a single year, with its Pitesti plant running at full capacity.

In 2012, a new plant was inaugurated in Tangiers, which will enable the company to expand its production, in particular with the launch of the " Lodgy "This is followed by the Dokker combispace and the Dokker Van.

In 2017, for the 3rd year running, Dacia confirmed its position as the 4th most popular passenger car brand in France. A real record in just over 10 years of existence.

Today, more than one million French people have confidence in and were won over by the reliability, habitability and fair price of Dacia products.

Dacia's first electric car

Dacia to launch its first electric car in 2021. The Group's low-cost brand Renault has confirmed this by unveiling its new Dacia Spring prototype. Originally scheduled for the 2020 Geneva Motor Show (cancelled due to the coronavirus).

The Dacia Spring is derived from the Renault K-ZE which will be launched on the Chinese market. Like the latter, the Dacia stands out for its small SUV look, with plastic protectors around the wings, raised ground clearance, roof bars and protective skis. The grey colour and fluorescent orange elements give it a very attractive look. The vehicle also boasts equipment previously unavailable from the brand, such as 100% LED headlights. The car also has 4 real seats and 5 doors. Finally, this new Dacia model is equally at home in the city or in a mixed environment.

Dacia Spring electric: what we know about the car

Technical aspects

For the time being, Dacia has provided only limited information on the technical aspects of the car.

The concept car is announced with a autonomy 200 kilometres according to the WLTP standard

La battery and the engine could be identical to those of the little Renault K-ZE: 26.8 kWh powering a 45 bhp motor. This may not seem like much power, but the Spring is primarily designed for urban and suburban use.

As for recharging, it could take just 30 minutes to recharge 80 % of the battery (using a fast socket) and 4 hours to reach 100 % (using a conventional socket).

The interior

The Spring concept car has no visible interior. However, the final vehicle will be derived from the Renault K-ZE.

It's a safe bet that the Renault will retain the general architecture of the cabin, while adapting certain plastics to the high standards of European consumers.

Dimensions

As far as dimensions are concerned. At 3.73 metres in length, the Dacia Spring Electric is somewhere between a minicar and a multi-purpose city car.

  • Peugeot 108: 3.48 m
  • Volkswagen e-up! : 3,60 m
  • Renault Twingo : 3.61 m
  • Dacia Spring: 3.73 m
  • Toyota Yaris IV hybrid: 3.94 m
  • Peugeot e-208: 4.05 m
  • Renault Zoe : 4.08 m

Prices

While we know the year of release of the electric Dacia Spring, which is due to be launched at the beginning of the first half of 2021, the Romanian brand has remained surprisingly silent on one crucial aspect when it comes to Dacia: pricing.

It is expected to cost between €15,000 and €20,000, excluding the bonus. This could put the car at €10,000 with the bonus. Dacia will unveil the definitive version of the Spring later this year at the Paris Motor Show which runs from 1 to 11 October.

Dacia Spring electric: key facts

The electric Dacia Spring could revolutionise the electric car market by making this technology available to a wider range of users.

What's more, the electric Dacia Spring has a number of strong points, including :

  • His look: SUVs are selling like hotcakes. Dacia has understood this and is offering its 1st electric vehicle in the form of a city-going adventurer.
  • A template made for the city: At just 3.73 metres long, this small electric SUV is made for the city.  By way of comparison, a Dacia Sandero city car is 33 cm longer at 4.06 metres. This compactness doesn't prevent it from having 5 seats and a very decent boot volume of 300 litres.
  • Generous production : Dacia plans to build around 30,000 units a year in Europe.
  • Approved electrical technology : For the moment, no technical data has been released on the Dacia Spring Electric. At best, we know that the range will be in excess of 200 kilometres. One thing is certain, however: Dacia will be benefiting from the Group's know-how and experience. Renault in the field. All that remains to be seen now is the power of the electric motor and the capacity of the battery.

It probably won't be the only one electric car "low-cost cars to emerge in the next few years. Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly affordable, which should boost the market for clean vehicles even further.
