A possible Gigafactory in France?

The exchange between Elon Musk and Emmanuel Macron about the possibility of setting up a Gigafactory in France was promising. The two leaders discussed the economic and environmental benefits of building such a facility in the country. The French President expressed France's commitment to the energy transition and proposed attractive incentives to attract Tesla investment. For his part, Musk emphasised the importance of local infrastructure and skills to support such a plant. The discussions paved the way for further negotiations and raised the prospect of a future Gigafactory in France, which could have a major impact on the country's automotive industry and employment.

After his lunch meeting with Bruno le Maire, the French Minister for the Economy and Business, the Tesla CEO told journalists from BFMTV that he was "very impressed by President Macron and his welcome" and is convinced that "substantial investments"made by the Tesla company would be made in France in the future. Although no official announcement has been made, we can nevertheless deduce that a Gigafactory will be set up to build Tesla electric cars or a battery similar to the Megapack in China.

What's more, the establishment of this electric cars could help the American carmaker achieve its 2030 target. On 1 March 2023, Elon Musk announced at the Tesla Investor Day in the United States that he wanted to produce 20 million units a year by 2030. In addition, the Gigafactory Europe, located in Berlin Brandenburg, has proved its worth in terms of the objectives set, as it is now capable of producing 5,000 units of Tesla Model Y in just one week.

What impact would a Gigafactory have in France?

The electric cars Tesla is one of the favourites. In fact, in Europe, there are no fewer than 232 018 Tesla sold in 2022This represents an increase of 38 % on the previous year. However, we note that since the pandemic, delivery times have lengthened, and importing a Gigafactory into France could help reduce this delay, particularly for the French.

On the other hand, at a time when the question of the ecological bonus should be reserved solely for French cars, the production of Tesla electric vehicles on the territory would then make it possible to continue to benefit from them. After the reduction in prices of these products the possibility of being eligible for environmental bonus of €5,000it would be a pity to no longer be able to grant this right.
