The different types of quadricycle

It's sometimes forgotten, but small cars are a particular feature of the European market, and they are governed by its laws. There are two categories, depending on the weight of the vehicle in particular.

Light quadricycles

  • Their unladen weight must not exceed 425 kg.
  • Their power must be less than or equal to 6 kW.
  • The engine capacity of internal combustion engines is limited to 50 CCfor petrol and diesel engines 500 CCfor diesel engines.
  • They must not measure more than 3 m long, 1,50 m wide and 2,50 m high.
  • They can only have two seats.

You can drive this type of car from 14 years of agehaving obtained a AM licenceor the road safety certificate (BSR light quadricycle option).

Heavy quadricycles

  • Their unladen weight must not exceed450 kg(except goods vehicles which are limited to600 kg)
  • Their power must be less than or equal to15 kW
  • They must not measure more than3,70 mlong,1,50 mwide and2,50 min height
  • Their speed is limited to90 km/h
It is possible to drive a heavy quadricycle once you have obtained your B1 licence (not to be confused with the B licence for driving cars), it is therefore necessary to pass thehighway code.

From 1 October 2022, the technical control for electric cars without a driving licence is now compulsory. It will have to be carried out within 4 years of the vehicle being put into circulation, and then once every two years.

Now that you know a little more about electric vehicles without a licence, it's time to move on to the rankings - here we go!
