Electric cars in 2022: a look back

Bilan véhicules électriques 2023

As we approach the end of 2022, it's time to take stock. One thing is certain: it has been a successful year for sales of electric cars. This fact is confirmed both in France and more widely in Europe. Historic figures with more than one million clean models (hybrids and plug-in hybrids combined) in France. Month after month, electric vehicle registrations continue to grow (+ 6,4 % in October 2022 compared with the same month last year).

Flagship models such as the Peugeot e-208 and the Fiat 500e have undergone impressive growth (respectively 36 % and 46 %) in terms of the number of vehicles registered. The figures are therefore very encouraging in terms of the goal of total electrification of electric vehicles and of the government's intention to end production of electric cars from 2035. Even so, some models are struggling to make headway, or are even posting negative results. Regrettably, registrations of the Renault Zoe E-Tech (– 73 %) and the Renault Twingo ZE (- 10 %). This is also the case for Dacia Spring (- 75 %) which is nonetheless an electric car with great potential, thanks to its attractive price and family-friendly practicality.

Electric cars that stand out in 2022

This year, 2022, has once again shown that French consumers are less and less reluctant to take the plunge and do their own shopping. ecological transition. They have given up their old internal combustion car for a less polluting model, much to the delight of manufacturers such as Audi which is considering stop producing petrol cars from 2026 onwards. The number of electric car registrations in France jumped 28.5 % to 169,335 registrationswhereas it fell by 12,2 % for hybrid vehicles.

How do you explain the French craze? environmental bonus and the conversion premium which change regularly and both offer very attractive rates for drivers after deductions. The different aid granted by the regions also represent real added value in the decision to go electric or not. The increase recharging stationswhich used to be an obstacle to the switch to electric vehicles, is now an opportunity. End November 2022There were more than 77,000 in France (an evolution of 51 % in the space of a year). The same applies to the efforts made by electric vehicle manufacturers to produce models with ever moreautonomy and performance. A great argument for drivers worried about running out of fuel. battery on long-distance journeys.

Fiat 500e: the perfect small city car

Fiat 500e

Always one of the most popular cars, the Fiat 500e was able to stabilise in 2022 despite losing a small place, and is now 6th. At the end of the year, the little Italian car unfortunately dropped out of the top 5. The new edition of the sleekly designed electric car registered 14,413 units over the course of the year, compared with 9 556 last year. An impressive rise in sales that promises a bright future for the little city car. Although still at the top of the rankings, it has yet to overtake its Californian rivals. Tesla.

The Italian manufacturer has decided to continue producing the model only in electric and hybrid versions. Production of the Fiat 500 internal combustion engine has already ceased in the UK, and is likely to do so soon in France too. The hybrid version, although still sold today, will gradually disappear from the brand's catalogue. This proved to be a very wise decision, as the electric version (available in two versions) now outstrips the internal combustion model in terms of sales. (7,261 in 2022). It's a surprising trend when you consider that the electric version is considerably more expensive, but apparently drivers are prepared to stretch their budgets to afford it. an electric model that's more respectful of nature and the environment! Compared with the previous year, the brand increased by 51 %the number of electric cars sold. For FiatThe model is an honourable success.

Tesla Model 3: on top despite a loss of speed

Tesla Model 3

With 1,369,611 units produced and 1,313,851 Tesla cars delivered during 2022, the brand will has delivered, as usual, very good sales performances worldwide. Surprisingly, however, it's a surprise, but in France, they're rather disappointing. La Tesla Model 3 is the perfect example. Largely dominant in 2021 with 24,911 models soldthe electric saloon of the American firm loses its throne with 14,430 registrationsa loss of 42 %.

There is no doubt that this is due to the increase in the price of the vehicle, which means that the benefit of the environmental bonus from 5 000 € as the vehicle (under €45,000) no longer meets the conditions for access. This makes the acquisition of the electric vehicle much less attractive for potential buyers, knowing that the model has gone from 40 000 à 60 000 € in the space of a few months and is now close to the 50 000 € for the most affordable Tesla Model 3. Despite these falling figures, the electric car is still going strong remain in the top 10 best-sellers this year.

Renault Megane E-Tech: the French car gets off to a good start

Undoubtedly the greatest development, the Renault Megane e-Tech has won over drivers with its many assets and its fair price in relation to the quality of the vehicle. After all, the French Touch surely has something to do with it! Indeed, outside the top 50 registrations in 2021 (45). Over the year 2022There are more than 13 000.

But make no mistake about it, there are good reasons for this development, because the vehicle from the Renault Trucks brand is due to go on sale at the end of 2021. It is therefore logical that its sales figures could only grow, especially given the good reputation of Renault.

Luxury brands struggle to make their mark

Still very much absent from the electric car market, luxury electric car brands such as Jaguar, Lamborghini or even Aston Martin offering very top-of-the-range models seem to be struggling to stand out from other manufacturers in a market that has already been highly competitive for some years. Targeting customers with very high and easily extendable budgets, they seem to be finding it very hard to find their audience and position their models at the top of the sales rankings.

Unfortunately, this trend continues from year to year. And yet.., there's no shortage of advantages to owning an electric car (low recharging costs, low maintenance compared with combustion vehicles, driving comfort, etc.). While most manufacturers, such as Volkswagen or Peugeothave one or more electric cars in their catalogue, This is far from being the case for very high-end brands.

Jaguar I-Pace: out of breath?

Jaguar I-Pace

Arguably the most popular of the luxury electric cars, the Jaguar I-Pace a tout pour séduire un public ayant un gros budget avec son allure élégante, its flopée d’équipements and technologies à bord (écran haute définition, assistance de conduite dernier cri, …).

Conclusion

Beev attend vos commentaires !
