Top 10 best used electric cars

prise-recharge-voiture-électrique

What is the best electric car second-hand? We're often asked this question. So we decided to write an article on the subject.

Are you thinking of switching to an electric car, but find that the new car market is still too expensive? You can't find a model that meets your needs within the budget you've set yourself, or you want to avoid the steep depreciation that a new vehicle suffers at the start of its life.

Let's take a look at the list of the best used electric cars. We've put together a top 10 list without ranking them from best to worst. Instead, we've decided to rank them by price, since these different models don't really compete with each other, but play in different segments.

Although the new car market is growing strongly, it only accounts for around 2% of sales in France. With the arrival of new models, the second-hand market is growing. There are almost 4,500 listings for electric vehicles on the La Centrale mid-2022 at the time of writing.

Used electric cars: the democratisation of the electric vehicle?

According toStatista30% of French people cite the price of an electric vehicle as the main obstacle to switching to an electric car.

Is an electric car right for you?

Against this backdrop, could second-hand electric cars provide a solution to the price issues facing French households?

Before considering the purchase of an electric car (used or new), you need to ask yourself a very important question: is an electric car right for me?

To answer this question, you need to do your calculations:

  • How far do you travel per day or even per week? If you drive 50 km a day, for example, and intend to recharge your vehicle every night, you'll need a vehicle with a lower fuel consumption. autonomy
  • What will my recharging solution be?
    • If you live in pavilionYou can install a recharging point at your home.
    • If you live in co-ownershipTo install charging points in your shared car park, you need to apply to your property manager.
    • If you live in a large cityIn France, cities are deploying self-service public recharging points where you can recharge your batteries.

Used electric cars: how to get a good deal?

How can I find the best used electric car ads?

There are several classified ad sites where you can search for a second-hand electric car.

We've made a small selection of trustworthy sites:

  • Carizy: This is a site for small ads between private individuals with the option of secure payment.
  • Leboncoin The only downside is that there isn't much choice. The only downside is that there's not much choice. To find an electric car, it's best to go to specialist websites.
  • Automobile.frThis site allows you to find second-hand cars, particularly electric cars, all over Europe.

What should I check before buying a used electric car?

As with an internal combustion model, you need to check the general condition of the car to avoid any unpleasant surprises:

  • Rubbing.
  • Pressings.
  • Scratches.
  • Traces.

Don't hesitate to consult the Buying guide of an electric vehicle and see what second-hand equivalents are available!

For second-hand electric cars, you need to pay particular attention to the battery

Every electric car battery has a certain capacity, expressed in Ampere hours: the greater the capacity, the more energy we can store and the greater the range of our vehicle.

However, over time, batteries undergo internal chemical reactions that reduce this initial capacity (for example, a year later a 100-litre tank of water will only hold 97 litres).

This phenomenon, known as ageing, is common to all lithium batteries, but the rate of ageing depends on a number of factors (e.g. the outside temperature to which the battery is exposed, how it is used, etc.). For example, you could find two vehicles produced identically, with the same number of km and the same age, but with completely different battery conditions. It's very important to know the state of health of the battery when you want to buy a new car. electric vehicle This is especially true when you consider that repairing or replacing the battery in an electric car can cost more than €10,000.

Car manufacturers often guarantee batteries for several years, so don't hesitate to make use of your warranty if it's still valid.

To get an idea of the price, consult sites such asAutovisual which estimate the price of used vehicles by geographical area.

Tip Before you buy a second-hand EV, you need to know the condition of the battery. The battery certificate provides a wealth of information about the condition of a battery and the range of a used electric vehicle. There is a service called La Belle BatterieLa Belle Batterie, which allows sellers to easily obtain a battery certificate. With La Belle Batterie, you can diagnose your battery yourself in just 5 minutes, without having to go anywhere.

meilleure voiture électrique occasion

The Beev tip: you can use the applications Leaf Spy pro for the Nissan Leaf, caniOn for the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, Citroën C0 and Peugeot Ion, or even CanZE These applications can be used to give batteries a rating (if the rating is 100, the battery is new and if the rating is below 80, you need to start looking at the warranty).

Why choose an electric car?

Once hard to find, used electric cars are increasingly available on the major used car sales platforms. Most customers opting for lease contracts such as LOAAs a result, more and more vehicles are coming onto the second-hand market that are only a few years old. These customers prefer to buy the latest models with greater range rather than renew their contracts in most cases. This is particularly true of the Renault Zoé and the Nissan Leaf, two of the best-selling electric cars in France, which are now looking for a 2nd buyer on the second-hand market. Renault has capitalised on the phenomenon by creating a special offer for its second-hand Zoé.

Another strong argument in the search for your future vehicle is that electric cars only require very low maintenance.

Batteries

For so long the battery life and the cost of replacement may have worried customers, today we have the necessary hindsight to confirm that the batteries do not need to be replaced.

In many cases, they can exceed the vehicle's overall lifespan, and it's no longer unusual to see electric vehicles that have covered more than 200,000 km with their original battery without any signs of substantial damage. If you're still worried about batteries, you should know that most manufacturers offer an 8-year or 200,000 km warranty on their vehicles' batteries.

It's also the ideal time to get started, as second-hand electric cars are becoming more and more affordable. While, for example, a Renault Zoé or a Nissan Leaf New cars sell for over €25,000, while used ones can be found for under €10,000.

Support available for used electric vehicles

Good news for future buyers of electric vehicles: you are eligible for the conversion premium if you are scrapping an old petrol or diesel car. This bonus can amount to up to €5,000, depending on your reference tax income.

If you live in the Greater Paris metropolisYou could be eligible for a further €6,000. In total, that's up to €11,000 to help you buy your electric car, new or used.

As well as a reduced purchase price thanks to government incentives, an electric vehicle also guarantees lower running costs.

As petrol prices rise, it is becoming increasingly tempting to switch to an alternative form of fuel. In the case of electric vehicles, the cost per kilometre is around €2 per 100 km. An electric car costs around 5 times less per kilometre than its internal combustion equivalent.
