As of 2021, the government has extended eligibility for the tax credit for the installation of charging stations, for private individualsto second homes. The government wants to democratize electric cars to reduce CO2 emissions from road transport. As part of this objective, "limiting the tax credit to primary residences would be counterproductive", according to MP Vincent Thiébaut.
According to the same MP, the fact that second homes are not eligible for the tax credit is delaying the switch to electric vehicles for some motorists. They "couldn't access their second homes with this type of vehicle". Over and above the simple objective of installing charging stations across the country, this would help to democratize electric vehicles a little more.
However, Barbara Pompili, the French Minister for Ecology, has specified that "for reasons of fairness" and "moderation of tax expenditure" you will be able to benefit from the tax credit for only one second home per taxpayer.
