Definition - Hydrogen vehicle
A hydrogen vehicle is a vehicle whose motive power is based on hydrogen. This type of technology can only be integrated into vehicles with an electric motor.
"The fuel cell is the key component of a hydrogen-powered vehicle. In the fuel cell, a redox reaction takes place, creating electricity. To do this, the cell converts a fuel, such as hydrogen, into electricity and water using oxygen.
In this sense, a hydrogen-powered vehicle emits very little pollution when in use, since the fuel cell that powers it emits only water.
The Benefits
- Can be produced from any source
- Emits very few pollutants during use
The Disadvantages
- 95 % of hydrogen is produced from hydrocarbons
- This process emits CO2greenhouse gases
In this sense, this type of hydogen feeding considerably increases theautonomy electric vehicles. Because, yes, despite using a fuel, hydrogen-powered vehicles are classified as electric vehicles. In fact, the fuel cell either powers the electric motor directly or, in the case of some vehicles, powers the motor via a battery.
In 2020, 158 hydrogen filling stations will be listed in France. This means that hydrogen fuel is already entering its initial marketing phase.
