The Mini was launched in 1959 in response to the Suez crisis, which had led to fuel shortages and petrol rationing in Britain. In response to this challenge, Leonard Lord, head of the British Motor Corporation (BMC), designed a small, affordable car: the Mini.
With 5,387,862 units produced, including almost 1.6 million sold in the UK, the Mini quickly became an icon, as much for its commercial success as for its exploits in motor sport.
In 2000, the brand was taken over by BMW, who modernised the Mini while retaining its iconic character. In 2001, a new generation was launched, and the brand name was changed to MINI to mark the change. The range was then extended to include models such as the Countryman, Clubman and Paceman, in keeping with the spirit of the original Mini.
In 2019, MINI introduces the Cooper SE, its first electric city car, continuing its heritage by adapting it to the challenges of modern mobility.
