What are the best powerful electric motorbikes (A licence)?

Lightning Strike

Electric motorbikes are conquering the two-wheeler market. They have achieved this by dint of efforts on the part of manufacturers to make the technology as competitive as electric cars, which until now have had the lion's share of the market.

I'm delighted, because these motorbikes have an advantage over their combustion cousins in terms of both environmental impact and performance.

Electric motorbikes have therefore become a very serious alternative to combustion bikes. But now that we've satisfied ourselves with that, a question emerges: which electric motorbike to choose? And more precisely, Which electric motorbike should you choose if you have an A licence?

Here, we're only going to focus on electric motorbikes that can be ridden with an A licenceBut we'll be covering other categories of electric motorbikes in other articles. Because there's something for everyone. Without further ado, let's take a look at the powerful electric motorbikes that are likely to win you over today.

The different motorbike licences

You need a licence to ride a motorbike. And that's an excellent idea when you consider that, while motorbikes are a practical means of transport, they are far more dangerous than cars. That's why it's so important to take more rigorous driving lessons.

There are 4 different motorbike licences:

  • AM licencewhich allows you to ride a motorbike with a maximum cylinder capacity of 50 cm3 with a maximum power of 4 kW,
  • A1 driving licencewhich authorises the use of motorbikes with a cylinder capacity not exceeding 125 cm.3 with a maximum power rating of 11 kW,
  • A2 licencewhich limits authorised power to 35 kW,
  • And the A licencewhich has no maximum power rating.

If you have the latter licence, you and I both know that you didn't go to all that trouble (the motorbike licence has a pretty impressive failure rate) to make do with a motorbike rated at less than 35 kW.

You certainly want a motorbike that pulls generously on your arms with every acceleration, and you're right. So in this article, we're going to focus on electric motorbikes that are only available to holders of an A licence, and have a power output of over 35 kW (47.5 hp).

A driving licence figures

Before going into more detail about the best powerful electric motorbikes available to A-licence holders, I'd like to go over a few figures. It never ceases to amaze me that electric motorbikes seem to attract far less interest from manufacturers, despite their obvious potential.

I'm not going to get into discussions about the ecological benefits of electric motorbikes. They are obvious, even if I still see room for improvement. What I don't understand so well is the financial interest that manufacturers fail to see.

According to StatistaA licence issues accounted for more than 6% of B licence issues in 2014, 2015 and 2016. That's quite a lot, since it represents more than 50,000 new A licences per year.

And it's a safe bet that these new bikers are increasingly sensitive to the ecological cause.

No doubt they'd like to see a slightly larger market for electric motorbikes, which would enable them to choose the electric motorbike that meets their needs. For the moment, as you will see, that's not the case.

The electric motorbikes I'm about to present to you are very good bikes, but they're still very expensive and there aren't enough of them to meet the diversity of needs. So this is an appeal to motorbike manufacturers: go electric, you won't be disappointed!

Having said that, let's move on to what interests us most: the list of the 5 best electric motorbikes for A licence holders.

The 5 best electric motorbikes for A licence holders

At the time of writing, there are more than 26 electric motorbikes on the market that develop more than 35 kW. There's something for everyone: urban, off-road, sports and all-rounders.

You will find a very comprehensive article where 26 electric motorbike models are classified and analysed on the Building your electric motorbike.

But if I had to recommend 5, taking into account the power criterion, with a view to an immediate purchase, I'd recommend the following.
