Hyundai Ioniq electric test drive

IONIQ is truly at the forefront of eco-mobility in the Hyundai range, and meets all customer expectations thanks to its easy-to-use, user-friendly technologies.

Driving efficiency

Hyundai is no stranger to the world of electric cars. Available since 2016 in 3 powertrains, Hybrid, Plug-in Hybrid and Electric, the IONIQ has been a resounding success. In Korea, the electric version has been the most popular since its launch, accounting for almost 64 % of sales of the IONIQ.IONIQHowever, it was less successful internationally. In 2019, Hyundai wants to put things right and is presenting a new version of the electric car with improved performance.

The new IONIQ Electric has a 38.3 kWh battery, giving it a range of 294 km on a certified cycle. Its engine has also been revised, from 88 kW (120 bhp) to 100 kW (136 bhp), bringing it into line with most of its rivals. However, where the IONIQ really shines is not in its sports car performance, but in its driving efficiency.

While the design of theIONIQ The new IONIQ is more aggressive, with sharper edges and a redesigned radiator grille. The headlamps are now LED, both front and rear, and have also been redesigned.

Unrivalled connectivity

Hyundai IONIQ electric 38 kWh application mobile

For 2019, Hyundai is introducing mobile connectivity to its IONIQ. With the BlueLink®For example, it is now possible to program the air conditioning and heating, check the vehicle's charge status and even unlock it from your smartphone. Connectivity has also been integrated into the vehicle, with a new 10.25-inch touchscreen in the centre of the dashboard. Compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, the screen is large and easy to use. We'll particularly appreciate the details of power consumption, as on the KONA and its KIA cousins, which use the same interface.

Overall ergonomics are good, the seat is comfortable and the engine can even be lively in sport mode. However, the IONIQ is not designed to beat the clock, but to be the most efficient. The overall design is rather conventional, and Hyundai is not taking any risks with this new IONIQ, which in the end is merely an improvement without being a revolution.

At the back, it's easy to seat two, but the coupé roofline of the saloon format, which is particularly pronounced on the IONIQ for aerodynamic reasons, doesn't leave much headroom for the taller among us.

A bigger battery?

Acclaimed by its owners, the Hyundai IONIQ Electric is an excellent tourer. According to Hyundai,"New IONIQ electric's battery capacity has been increased from 28 kWh to 38.3 kWh, giving drivers a greater range. The range is 32 % longer, at 294 km.". While this significant improvement is appreciated, we would have liked Hyundai to have gone even further and integrated the same battery as in its 64 kWh KONA. In this configuration, we could have expected a range of almost 500 km, which is as good as, if not better than, the best in the segment.

However, the 100 kW fast charge enables us to set off on long journeys. The IONIQ Electric is very stable, even at high speeds, and its record efficiency means we can cover between 250 and 300 km on the motorway between each 20 to 30 minute break to recharge the batteries.

At home, the IONIQ electric also does better than its predecessor, with a 7.2 kW charger compared with 6.6 kW for the previous version. A full charge will take around 6 hours and 15 minutes on a wallboxSo you can leave every morning with full batteries and no worries.
