Like many other manufacturers, Porsche also needs to enter the electric vehicle market. l'European Union voted the'a ban on the sale of combustion-powered cars from 2035. And for its entry into this world, we can't really say that the brand has done things by halves. At the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show, it officially lifted the veil on its Taycan, an ultra-high-performance zero-emission saloon that has no intention of making a fuss. However, the arrival of a Electric Porsche was far from self-evident a few years ago, and to tell the truth, it was more of a heresy than anything else for enthusiasts of the brand.

While the rest of the Porsche range adopts a coherent style, the Taycan stands out from the rest, with very different and much more daring lines. But this doesn't mean that the'brand DNA, since'It features a number of emblematic design elements, starting with the luminous band at the front.'rear. While some might find an air of similarity between the electric saloon and the Panamera, which boasts an impressive range of models, the Panamera's rear end is also very similar to that of the electric saloon.'Elsewhere, with similar dimensions, the Taycan draws its inspiration from the 911's design. This is evident not only in its silhouette, but also in its long bonnet and sloping rear window.

Once on board, it's immediately clear how different the Porsche Taycan is from other cars on the market. The top-of-the-range saloon is a real spaceship, with its three screensall delivered as standard, whatever the version. These include a large handset 16-inch curved digital screenThis is combined with two touch-screen panels in the centre, giving access to the entire infotainment system. Overall, the driving position is practical and ergonomic, except for the air conditioning jets can only be adjusted via the touchscreen.

But one of the biggest assets of this Porsche Taycanis above all its driving position. It's a very comfortable position, and one that's well suited to all body sizes, thanks to a wide range of seat adjustments. Of course, the finish is virtually perfect, with top-of-the-range materials such as leather and Alcantaradepending on the finish chosen. You can also call on the brand's personalisation department to choose an interior to suit your image. As you can imagine, the space on board is not necessarily the largest in the segment, and the Taycan is not ideal for carrying large passengers. The boot is smaller than that of a Tesla Model Swith 407 litres in the rear and only 81 litres in the front.

Now it's time to get behind the wheel of the Porsche Taycan. There are several versions to choose from, estate and saloonwith power ratings of up to 761 bhp for the Turbo S trim level the most powerful in the range. This is precisely the one we had the chance to try out, and to say the least, we weren't disappointed! However, if you're a hard-core road user looking for a car with a great autonomywe advise you to opt for the version 4Smore accessible and able to travel up to 463 kilometres on a single charge. For our part, our test model is limited to 381 kilometres, which is still very respectable. Fuel consumption is relatively high, at 25.6 kWh/100 km on average.

Despite a weight displayed at 2.3 tonnesThe brand's new star does a pretty good job of it, and is very dynamic indeed. The 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.8 seconds thanks to Launch ControlThis may come as a real surprise the first time around. All the more so as the sports car is equipped with a two-speed automatic gearbox, which prevents the acceleration from running out of steam like a Tesla Model S, for example. Fortunately, the brakes are also very effective, especially as the car is equipped with the energy recovery on deceleration. In practical terms, the car slows down on its own as soon as the accelerator pedal is released. This system also makes it possible to recharge the battery and improve range by a few kilometres.

Ultra-sharp and precise, the Porsche Taycan is a true sports car, but not just that. It is above all a electric saloondesigned for long journeys. That's why its damping is so comfortable, yet firm enough to provide excellent roadholding. Quite simply, it can take almost any bend at speeds you'd never dream of! While there are several driving modes, our favourite is of course the sportiest configuration, which allows the car to show off all its dynamic qualities. But in comfort mode too, the car behaves extremely well, rest assured. Above all, it's very reassuring, whatever happens. The steering is pleasant and supple, and the car can also be driven in town without any problems despite its generous dimensions. The battery, with a capacity of 93.4 kWh can be loads up to 80 % in 22 minutes only on one fast terminal such as those provided by Ionity thanks to its 800-volt architecture. The saloon comes as standard with a 22 kW charger.

The new Porsche Taycan: a charging monster

The restyled Taycan, which will be launched in spring 2024, is set to be the fastest-charging electric car on the market.

Here are some of the reasons for this title:

1. Ultra-fast 800V recharge:

  • The Taycan can be recharged at an 800V fast-charging station, enabling it to go from 10% to 80% of range in just 18 minutes. This is an absolute record for a production electric car.
  • By way of comparison, the Tesla Model 3 Long Range, one of the benchmarks in terms of range, takes around 30 minutes to go from 10% to 80% of range at a 250 kW rapid charging point.
  • The Taycan's 800V charging technology is based on the CCS (Combined Charging System) standard, which means it is compatible with a wide network of charging points across Europe.

2. High-capacity battery:

  • The Taycan is equipped with a large-capacity battery, with an estimated net capacity of 98 kWh. This gives it a range comparable to other top-of-the-range electric saloons.
  • The entry-level Taycan 4 offers a range of 450 km.
  • The Taycan Turbo S, the most powerful version, offers a range of 412 km.

3. New recharging technologies:

  • Porsche has developed new recharging technologies for the Taycan, including an intelligent battery management system that optimises recharging speed.
  • This system takes into account a number of factors, such as the battery temperature, the state of charge and the power of the charging point, to ensure optimum recharging.
  • Porsche has also developed an intelligent recharging system that allows the Taycan to be recharged at home using solar energy.

To conclude this test, the Porsche Taycan is quite simply an incredible car. Fast, powerful, comfortable and reassuring, the saloon ticks all the boxes. Not to mention that it's also ultra-technological and very easy to handle. Close to perfection? Without a doubt. The only flaw, and not the least, is its price. Therange starts from €91,055. In other words, the saloon is not eligible for theenvironmental bonuswhich is not granted toelectric carsover €60,000.
