BYD: what explains its leadership?
The company is first and foremost a manufacturer of batteries, where it is the market leader.
In fact, its batteries are built using a technology found only at BYD : the battery Blade battery. Rectangular and flat in shape, this technology has a number of advantageous features, such as :
- High level of safety: thanks to lithium iron phosphate, the raw material improves cooling efficiency and preheating performance
- A great autonomy By using the blade battery, the surface area is increased to more than 50 %, unlike conventional batteries. This ensures greater energy density and optimises the vehicle's range.
- Longer battery life: the Blade battery has over 5,000 charge and discharge cycles. That's well beyond conventional batteries, where the cycle is between 1,000 and 1,500 and the average lifespan is around 10 years, according to many manufacturers.

BYD and Tesla: a duel or a collaboration?
Tesla and BYD are rivals in the market, since both car brands offer similar electric cars, whether saloons or top-of-the-range SUVs.
However, there are a few nuances to consider. The American brand has chosen its competitor to supply it with BYD's Blade batteries and to integrate them into their Tesla Model Y Propulsion. As we mentioned earlier, BYD has expertise in electric batteries. These make their vehicles more efficient, as do those of their competitors.
Despite this collaboration, the Chinese brand wants to accelerate its position in the market and take on Tesla, in particular with numerous models such as the BYD Seal, a competitor to the Model 3.
For the time being, Tesla has managed to retain its number 1 position in the European electric vehicle market. Not least thanks to the lower prices of its Model 3 and Model Y Propulsion at the beginning of 2023, so that they can benefit from the environmental bonus. But many Chinese brands are now arriving on the European market, and represent a real threat to the American manufacturer.
Conclusion
The year 2023 is off to a good start for the Chinese brand BYD, and there's no end in sight to its development, especially with all the new products in the pipeline.
