Hypermarkets installing recharging points

Borne de recharge supermarché

Carrefour recently announced the installation of 2,000 charging points in the Group's hypermarkets, a move that has reignited the race to equip French hypermarkets with charging points.

Many mass retailers are equipping their hypermarkets with charging points, the aim being to attract new customers and offer them an additional service, as well as tipping the balance in their favour.

It is also part of a national effort launched by the government to reach 100,000 charging points across the country, a plan known as "Objectif 100 000 bornes" (Objective 100,000 charging points), which has already been signed up to by several major groups, including major retailers.

But what are the advantages and limitations of these charging points in hypermarket car parks, and what are hypermarkets doing to help meet the "100,000 charging points target" by 2022? Let's take a look at the good and bad performers.

N.B. The 100,000 charge points in France will not be reached until May 2023 (cf. Charging stations: what's the current state of deployment?)

L'Objectif 100 000 bornes - definition and hypermarkets good students in the installation of recharging stations

By the end of 2020, according to Avere, there will be 30,000 charging points in France, a figure that represents around 1 charging point for every 10 electric cars. So we need to speed up the roll-out of charging points, and hypermarkets have a role to play in building a national network.

What is the "100,000 mile target"?

The target of 100,000 charging points has been set by the French Ministries of Ecological Transition and Transport. The aim was to mobilise players who could take action to extend the network of recharging points in France. These players were brought together in November 2020 so that volunteers could sign the charter for this objective, thereby committing themselves to taking part in the construction of a national network of recharging points.

Who are the signatories?

The signatories include Leclerc, Lidl and Système U, all of which have already announced concrete measures to help meet the target set by the government. Leclerc will install 5,000 charging points (i.e. 10,000 recharging points) and Système U has announced the installation of 2,000 charging points. Lidl, meanwhile, has announced that all its new shops will be equipped with charging points, with a target of 900 new shops by 2021, and that their charging points will be powered by green electricity, mainly from solar panels installed on the roofs of its supermarkets. All three are very good students!

Hypermarkets that have not signed up to the 100,000 terminals target

Because the distribution network is not limited to just three groups of distributors, let's take a look at the other hypermarket chains that have not signed up to the 100,000 kiosks target.

Those who install bollards anyway

Although not all mass retailers have signed up to the 100,000 charging points target, many are taking action and have set up projects to install electric vehicle charging points in their car parks.

Starting with Leclerc, the group already has 823 charging points spread across 231 Leclerc hypermarket car parks, and plans to install 5,000 new charging points by 2022 and a further 10,000 by 2025, enough to encourage electric mobility throughout the country! Carrefour has announced that it will install 2,000 before 2023, with 56% fast-charging stations - a good point. However, the group has some catching up to do, as it currently only has 70 charging points in its network. Casino, for its part, thanks to a partnership with Meridiam, plans to equip 80 of its hypermarkets with charging points by 2021, with charging points for slow, fast and ultra-fast charging.

Auchan is lagging further behind, with 105 charging points installed in the car parks of its hypermarkets, and without having announced any targets for the installation of new charging points despite a partnership with Nissan for the current charging points.

Hypermarkets with few or no charging points

While most of their competitors are following the electric mobility wave, some hypermarket and supermarket groups are still lagging behind.

Auchan, for example, has only 105 charging points installed in its hypermarket car parks, and has not announced any targets for the installation of new charging points, despite a partnership with Nissan for existing charging points. Cora has said little or nothing about the charging points available in its hypermarket car parks, and has not announced any targets, nor has Aldi.

The advantages and limitations of supermarket charging points.

Hypermarket charging points can be a good way of recharging your vehicle quickly and efficiently while you're out shopping, but they do have their limitations. Here's a quick look at the advantages and limitations of these facilities.

Benefits

For customers :

  • Practice

Recharging your car while you're out shopping is practical because you don't have to wait for your car to recharge - you're just busy.

  • Free or at cost

It all depends on the group, but most hypermarket charging points are currently free or at cost price, which means that the hypermarket will not make a profit on this service.

  • Ultra-fast recharging

This point doesn't apply to all hypermarkets, as we'll see in the limitations just below, but if you're lucky enough to have a hypermarket near you that offers ultra-fast charging, it's a real advantage. Thanks to these ultra-fast charging points, you can fully recharge your vehicle in just 15 minutes.

For hypermarkets

  • An extra service for customers to enhance their appeal

From at In hypermarkets, making charging points available is an additional service offered to customers, who can therefore choose a hypermarket equipped with charging points rather than one without.

  • A commitment to the future

Encouraging electro-mobility means encouraging a cleaner, more environmentally-friendly world.

Limits

For customers

  • Slow charging stations

A simple figure: 40 minutes is the average time we spend shopping, yet some chain shops continue to install slow charging points, which take around 1.5 hours to fully recharge the vehicle... Whereas fast charging points allow you to reach 80% in just 30 minutes, a much more appropriate choice. So it's hit or miss that your usual hypermarket will have a slow, fast or even ultra-fast charging point for the lucky ones! Unless you decide to change hypermarkets and go to a competitor that offers better quality charging points... All bets are off!

  • Not enough recharging points

Again, this depends on the infrastructure, but some infrastructures may not have enough recharging points and they may all be taken up quite often. In this case, make sure you have enough recharging points. battery or look for another place to recharge your vehicle.

  • Poor guidance / non-existent tools

Linked to the previous point, the lack of a mobile application for checking available charging points or an interactive map is a problem for some, but others are intelligently developing their network, such as Leclerc, which has a special mobile application for its charging points.

Hypermarket with recharging point, which one to choose?

A customer spends an average of just 40 minutes in a hypermarket, so it's essential to install charging points that can provide a substantial recharge in a short space of time.

To do this, you can opt for a number of recharging solutions:

  • accelerated charging via a 22kw charging point, which will save your customers between 100 and 150km of electricity.autonomy in 1 hour.
  • fast recharging via a 50kw to 350kw charging point that will give your customers 200km of range in 1 hour of charging, or even a full charge in around 15 minutes for the most powerful charging points.

Installing a slightly more powerful recharging point wouldn't be of much use, as your customers won't be spending several hours at the site, so they'd gain very little range while recharging.

The price of a charging point

  • For a recharging point 22kw with two charging points: around €4,500
  • For a recharging point 30kw with two charging points: at least €7,000
  • For a recharging point 60kw with two charging points: around €20,000
  • For a recharging point 120/180kw with two charging points: between €32,000 and €49,000

Would you like to install a recharging point?

hypermarché

How can I be listed as a hypermarket with kiosks?

All your charging points are installed and you're ready to welcome your first electric vehicles. Now it's time to let them know that you have charging points!

There are several ways of doing this:

  • Google Maps: The world's largest mapping service. You can use it to indicate on your Google page that you have charging stations, so that other electric vehicle owners can find out about them.
  • Tesla's Destination Charging: this is Tesla's website, listing all the charging points for Tesla users.
  • ChargeMap is another mapping service, combined with a social network to help electric vehicle users identify charging points in Europe.
  • Your group's website/application: of course, you'll need to display this information on your retail chain's website or application. Leclerc, for example, has its own application!

Conclusion

Installing a recharging point in your hypermarket car park can only be good for you, as it will allow you to get ahead of your competitors while benefiting from subsidies!
