The 2024 ecological bonus: a boost for electric cars
15 December 2023, The French government has announced that the ecological bonus will be extended to 2024. This bonus, which is granted under certain conditions, reduces the purchase price of an electric vehicle.
What are the changes to the ecological bonus in 2024?
- Minimum environmental score
Although the 2.4 tonne limit is often cited as a criterion for assessing the environmental impact of vehicles, it may not be enough to truly reflect the environmental impact of vehicles.carbon footprint total.
In fact, the provenance of electric vehicles and the environmentally unfriendly manufacturing processes in China, combined with the energy-intensive means of transport used to bring these vehicles to Europe, can considerably compromise their green credentials.
The environmental score, a key element in this equation, takes a holistic approach, taking into account all phases of the electric vehicle's life cycle, from the production of metals and materials, including batteries, to assembly and transport.
In this way, the introduction of a minimum environmental score acts as a catalyst to encourage 'made in Europe', although this could be interpreted more as a consequence than an initial condition.
It is important to note that to be eligible for the ecological bonus, a vehicle must obtain a score of at least 60 points out of 80 according to this environmental calculation methodology. This reinforces the importance of considering the entire production and delivery process when assessing the carbon footprint of an electric vehicle.
