What is the conversion bonus?

This financial aid, which encourages drivers to adopt more environmentally-friendly mobility solutions, is in addition to those already in existence. However, the latter has different conditions and amounts of aid! It's important to know that the 2023 conversion bonus provides assistance of up to €6,000 for the acquisition of a more environmentally-friendly vehicle, as part of the ecological transition.

Setting the scene

The conversion premium is a subsidy for the purchase or lease of a low-pollution vehicle. In return, the beneficiary must scrap his or her old polluting vehicle.

These are: diesel vehicles first registered before 2011, or petrol vehicles first registered before 2006.

The conversion bonus: what will change in 2023?

Before the current scale came into effect on January 1, 2023, the old one contained a number of conditions. The main change concerns the eligibility of thermal vehicles for the conversion bonus. Since July 2021, Crit'Air 2 models (air quality certificate, all diesel and gasoline) are no longer eligible for the conversion bonus, so diesel vehicles no longer benefit.

It should also be remembered that in 2020, the President of the French Republic was introduced by the French President. This incentive, reserved for the first 200,000 customers, was designed to save the automotive sector, which had suffered as a result of the health crisis. This bonus was different from the others not only because it included Crit'Air 3 vehicles, but also because the reference tax income was set at €18,000, instead of the usual €13,489.

How much is the conversion bonus?

Assistance amounts vary according to a number of criteria: the type of vehicle, your reference tax income per unit... So we've put together this table to show you the amount you can claim, depending on your situation!

Please note that for passenger cars, plug-in hybrid vans(range ≤ 50 km) and combustion engines with a reference tax income per unit of €14,089 or less, if the following conditions are met, you will receive a higher amount of aid:

  • over 12,000 km travelled per year,
  • commuting distance > 30 km.

For motorized 2 (or 3) wheels or electric quadricycles, the amount of aid can be up to €1,100, subject to the purchase cost of the vehicle and its electric power. However, the vehicle must be new, and the maximum amount of assistance with the ecological bonus is capped at €2,000.

Good to know: If you live or work in a low-emission zone (ZFE) and your local authority has granted you a subsidy for the purchase or lease of a clean vehicle, then you can benefit from an additional premium of up to €1,000.

The ecological bonus: can be combined with the conversion bonus

This bonus is designed to reward motorists who have switched to a new vehicle with low CO2 emissions.

Just like its counterpart, the conversion bonus, the ecological bonus rewards drivers who switch to a clean vehicle. The conditions for obtaining the bonus are more or less the same (purchase price, CO2 emission level, etc.), with the exception that internal combustion vehicles are not eligible for the bonus. This aid is all the more significant in that it can be combined with the conversion bonus.

For example, for the purchase of a new electric vehicle worth less than €47,000, you can benefit from a subsidy of €5,000 for the ecological bonus, and €5,000 for the conversion premium, i.e. a final deduction of €10,000 on the purchase price of your vehicle!

Good to know: the ecological bonus scale will also undergo changes from January1, 2023.

For the sake of clarity, you will find below all the information concerning the amount of aid for which you are eligible, ecological bonus and conversion bonus.

How do I get the conversion bonus?

The application must be made personally if the professional does not advance the premium. This must be done within 6 months of invoicing your vehicle; for leasing, the date of the first payment is taken into account.

Documents to be provided :

  • registration document for the vehicle purchased (or leased) in your name,
  • registration document for the old vehicle being scrapped,
  • your bank details.

Then all you have to do is visit the government website to make your application. Don't panic, everything will be explained and detailed throughout the process.

In a nutshell: the conversion bonus rewards you for acquiring a vehicle with low CO2 emissions. This aid can amount to up to €6,000 for electric cars and €10,000 for electric vans, and can be combined with the ecological bonus.
