What is the conversion premium?
This financial aid, which encourages drivers to adopt more environmentally-friendly mobility solutions, is in addition to those already in existence. However, the conditions and amounts of this aid are different! It's important to know that the 2023 conversion premium provides aid of up to €6,000 for the purchase of a more environmentally-friendly vehicle, as part of the ecological transition.
Setting the scene
The conversion premium is a subsidy for the purchase or lease of a low-pollution vehicle. In return, the beneficiary must scrap their old polluting vehicle.
These are: diesel vehicles first registered before 2011, or petrol vehicles first registered before 2006.
The conversion premium: what's changing in 2023
Before the current scale was applied, from 1 January 2023, the old one contained a number of conditions. The main change concerns the eligibility of internal combustion vehicles for the conversion premium. Since July 2021, Crit'Air 2 models (air quality certificate, all diesel and petrol) are no longer eligible for the conversion premium, so diesel vehicles no longer benefit.
In addition, it should be remembered that in 2020 a exceptional conversion premium was introduced by the French President. The aim of this aid, which was reserved for the first 200,000 customers, was to save the car industry, which had suffered as a result of the health crisis. This bonus was different from others not only because it included Crit'Air 3 vehicles, but also because the reference tax income was set at €18,000, rather than the usual €13,489.

How much is the conversion premium?
The amount of assistance varies according to a number of criteria: the type of vehicle, your reference tax income per unit, etc. We've put together a table showing the amount you can claim, depending on your situation!
Note that for passenger cars, plug-in hybrid vans (autonomy ≤ 50 km) and heaters whose reference tax income per unit is less than or equal to €14,089, if the following conditions are met, then you will benefit from a higher amount of aid :
- reference tax income per unit ≤ €6,300,
- more than 12,000 km travelled per year,
- commuting distance > 30 km.
For motorised 2 (or 3) wheelers or electric quadricycles, the amount of aid can be up to €1,100, subject to the purchase cost of the vehicle and its electrical power. However, the vehicle must be new, and the maximum amount of assistance with the environmental bonus is capped at €2,000.
Good to know: If you live or work in a low-emission zone (EPZ) and your local authority has granted you aid for the purchase or hire of a clean vehiclethen you can benefit from a additional premium up to €1,000.

The ecological bonus: can be combined with the conversion premium
This bonus is designed to reward motorists who have switched to a new vehicle with low CO2 emissions.
Just like its counterpart, the conversion premium, the ecological bonus rewards drivers who switch to a clean vehicle. The conditions for obtaining the bonus are much the same (purchase price, CO2 emission level, etc.), except that internal combustion vehicles are not eligible. This aid is all the more significant because it can be combined with the conversion bonus.
For example, if you buy a new electric vehicle worth less than €47,000, you can get a €5,000 eco-bonus and €5,000 conversion allowance, giving you a final deduction of €10,000 on the purchase price of your vehicle!
Good to know: there will also be changes to the eco-bonus scale from 1st January 2023.
For the sake of clarity, you will find below all the information concerning the amount of aid you can claim, environmental bonus and conversion premium combined.
