An MG Motors plant soon in Europe?

SAIC Motor MG

The Chinese cars are taking an increasing share of the European electric car market. In fact, in 2022, Chinese automakers sold more than 202,000 electric passenger vehicles. This represents a 145% increase on 2021, when 82,500 Chinese electric cars were purchased. This success has prompted Chinese brands to consider setting up shop in Europe to meet the growing demand from European consumers.

With this in mind, SAIC Motor, a highly reputed Chinese carmaker, has decided to set up a plant in Europe. This initiative aims to strengthen its presence on the European market and respond effectively to the growing demand for electric vehicles.

Who is SAIC Motor?

SAIC Motor (Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation) is one of China's largest automakers. It owns such renowned subsidiaries as MG Motors, Maxus and SAIC Volkswagenwhich builds Volkswagen vehicles specifically for China. In addition, MG Motors accounts for 70% of their sales outside China..

With a strong presence in several foreign markets, including Australia, India and Mexico, SAIC Motor is now turning its attention to the European market, SAIC Motor is now turning its attention to the European market.. In this context, the company is currently looking for a production site in Europe. The aim of this move is to consolidate its presence on the European market by producing locally, thus responding more effectively to the needs of European consumers.

The advantages of building an MG Motors plant in Europe

For the moment, the group has not given any indication of where or what cars will be produced at their plant. However, the assumption that MG Motor is more than likely, given that the brand accounts for 55% of Chinese automaker sales in Europein 2022.

Setting up a SAIC plant in Europe would bring many advantages, especially if production is dedicated to electric vehicles from the MG brandelectric vehicles, such as the MG4the MG5 and the MG ZS EV.

First of all, this installation would considerably reduce delivery times for European customers. At present, delivery times for non-stocked cars are around 4 to 6 months. However, for certain models such as the MG ZS EV and the MG4 Comfortdelivery times can be as long as a year, due to the high demand for these vehicles. Producing these cars in Europe would enable us to respond quickly to consumer needs and significantly reduce waiting times.

In addition, the French government has announced a reform of the criteria for awarding state subsidies for clean vehicles by the end of the year. This reform could include an ecological bonus exclusively for electric cars produced within the European Union. If this is the case, SAIC could counter this reform by offering competitive prices, enabling it to remain competitive with European automakers and continue to sell its vehicles at the best price.
