Is winter the enemy of electric batteries?

It's no surprise that all electric vehicles suffer some loss of range during the winter months. However, some cars lose more than others. According to research by Recurrentin winter, an electric car :

  • consumes between 20 and 30 % more
  • can lose up to 50 % on short journeys.

These figures may seem alarming at first glance. Nevertheless, carmakers of electric cars are working to make models that are increasingly resistant to extreme weather conditions. Batteries are more robust and better able to withstand cooler temperatures. This trend is set to decline over time.

Tips for maintaining your electric car battery

winter enemy battery

Cold weather affects electric vehicles. That's why they are now equipped with two batteries. The lithium-ion battery battery is used to drive the motor, and a backup 12 V to maintain vehicle systems such as heating heating, the air conditioningair conditioning power windows and heated seats.

Freezing weather affects both batteries and slows down the chemical reactions in the battery, reducing battery performance. This can result in reduced autonomy. However, many electric vehicles are equipped witha heat pump to improve range in winter conditions.

Make sure you have the right amount of power in your battery

For faster charging and longer range when you start your journey, some cars can preheat their battery cells. But for the car to preheat the battery, a certain battery capacity is required. This is not a problem when the electric vehicle is plugged in, but it becomes quite a problem when it's parked with no immediate possibility of recharging. The percentage required to preheat your battery varies, but generally it's around about 20% or more.

Recharge your battery a little more than usual

You should always make sure that your car has a little extra power in the batteryshould anything unexpected happen. If you're going on a shorter trip, charge your battery up to 90 % and for a longer journey, charge it up to 100 %. You never know what might happen (road closures, accidents or anything else that can get you stuck in the cold).

Nevertheless, in normal times, Beev also recommends that you never charge your electric vehicle to 100%.as this can damage your batteryA charge of approximately 90 % is recommended. But if you're going on a longer trip, such as a vacation, you can of course recharge your battery to 100 %. It will be all the more beneficial for you.

Take care

Energy savings are certainly tempting, especially in winter, but they must never be achieved at the expense of your safety! but never at the expense of your safety! All windows must be kept free of ice and condensation at all times. And don't skimp on light (at dusk, for example). Also, drive with extreme caution on very smooth and slippery roads, and avoid excessive recuperation (regenerative braking) by selecting a low recuperation level and by carefully lifting your foot off the accelerator pedal.

Conclusion

Now you have a clearer overview of the electric SUVs available on market in 2023 for this winter. You now have all the information you need to make your choice! And don't forget that other electric SUVs are available for less than 40,000 euroslike the Peugeot e-2008 or the DS 3 E-Tense. For bigger budgets, much more expensive 100% electric SUVs featuring the latest innovations and technologies are available to treat yourself for Christmas.

Beev recommends that you evaluate your needsin terms of on-board space, range and the type of use you'd like to make of it (short trips around town or longer distances). Make sure it fits your budget, so you don't regret your purchase. Is there an electric SUV whose features caught your eye? We look forward to hearing from you!
