Hyundai Ioniq electric test drive: a long-awaited test drive.

In 2019, Hyundai returns to the forefront with a restyled version of its IONIQ Electric. This second phase brings its share of new features. According to the prices we know so far, the difference should only be around €1,500 compared with phase 1. After only 3 years on the market, what has this restyling changed for theIONIQ? And is the IONIQ still the queen of efficiency?

Driving efficiency

This is not Hyundai' s first foray into the world of electric cars. Available since 2016 in 3 powertrains - Hybrid, Plug-in Hybrid and Electric - the IONIQ has been a resounding success. While in Korea the electric version has been the most popular since its launch, taking nearly 64% ofIONIQ sales, it has been less successful internationally. In 2019, Hyundai is aiming to rectify this and is presenting a new version of the electric car with improved performance.

The new IONIQ Electric is equipped with a 38.3 kWh battery, giving it a range of 294 km on a certified cycle. Its engine has also been revised, from 88 kW (120 hp) to 100 kW (136 hp), bringing it into line with most of its competitors. However, where the IONIQ really shines is not in its sporty performance, but in its driving efficiency.

While the design of the 2016IONIQ left us a little disappointed with its wind-tunnel aerodynamics, the new IONIQ is more aggressive, with sharper edges and a redesigned grille. The headlamps are now LED, both front and rear, and have also been redesigned.

Unrivalled connectivity

For 2019, Hyundai is introducing mobile connectivity to its IONIQ. With the BlueLink® app, it's now possible to program the air conditioning, heating, check the vehicle's charge status or even unlock it from your smartphone. Connectivity also enters the vehicle, with a new 10.25-inch touchscreen in the middle of the dashboard. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatible, the screen is large and easy to use. Particularly noteworthy is the detailed display of power consumption, as on the KONA and its KIA cousins, which use the same interface.

Overall ergonomics are good, the seat is comfortable and the engine can even be lively in sport mode. However, the IONIQ is not designed to beat the clock, but to be the most efficient. The overall design is rather conventional, and Hyundai isn't taking any risks with this new IONIQ, which in the end is merely an improvement without being a revolution.

In back, it's easy to seat two, but the coupé roofline of the sedan format, particularly pronounced on the IONIQ for aerodynamic reasons, doesn't leave much headroom for the taller among us.

A bigger battery?

Acclaimed by its owners, the Hyundai IONIQ Electric is an excellent tourer. According to Hyundai, " the battery capacity of the New IONIQ electric has been increased from 28 kWh to 38.3 kWh, giving the driver a greater range. The range is32% longer, at 294 km ". While this significant improvement is appreciated, we would have liked Hyundai to go even further and integrate the same battery as in its 64 kWh KONA. In this configuration, we could have expected a range of almost 500 km, which is as good as, if not better than, the best in the segment.

Nevertheless, the 100 kW fast recharge allows us to set off on long journeys. The IONIQ Electric is very stable even at high speeds, and its record-breaking efficiency enables us to cover 250 to 300 km on the freeway between breaks of around 20 to 30 minutes to recharge the batteries.

At home, the IONIQ electric does even better than its predecessor, with a 7.2 kW charger compared with 6.6 kW for the previous version. A full charge will take around 6 hours and 15 minutes on a wallbox, so you can leave every morning with a full set of batteries.
