Driving an electric car for your dog's well-being

Shipper Cupra Born

What if we told you that your dog would feel more at home in a electric car ? This is the result of a survey carried out by Car Gurus and the British University of Lincoln. For this survey, the behavior of 20 dogs was observed. The idea was for each dog to take a 10-minute ride in a combustion-powered car, followed by a 10-minute ride in an electric car, in order to observe any changes in their behavior.

The person in charge is Dr. Daniel Moulins, professor of veterinary behavioral medicine. He states that "Our results clearly show that dogs appear to be more relaxed in electric vehicles, particularly when examining behavioral traits such as agitation. In addition, an interesting and somewhat unintended revelation of the study came from the dogs we identified as exhibiting potential symptoms associated with motion sickness." But then why do they feel better when traveling in an electric car?

Peace of mind in an electric car

The electric cars are quieter than petrol or diesel cars, because they don't need a combustion engine to propel the vehicle. Instead, they use an electric motor, which is much quieter when running. What's more, the transmission systems of electric vehicles are less noisy. On the other hand, many electric cars, such as the Tesla Model Y for example, have soundproofed interiors to ensure complete peace of mind on board. The quieter the ride, the less stressed your dog will be. In fact, studies have shown a 30% drop in dogs' heart rate when they take to the road in an electric car. It has also been noted that the majority of dogs remain in a reclining position, and are therefore more comfortable in a clean vehicle.

Electric cars have better handling

Just like us, dogs also experience motion sickness. In fact, owners reported that their dogs suffered from nausea (44% of dogs observed) when traveling by car. One factor that could help our four-legged friends to relax is the feeling inside the electric car. Firstly, the fact that the battery is located in the floor of the vehicle means that its center of gravity is lower, so the electric vehicle will be more stable.

In addition, electric vehicles such as the Volvo XC40 Rechargehave good suspension systems to absorb road irregularities, making the ride much more pleasant and suppressing vibrations. After the two 10-minute journeys in a combustion vehicle and then in an electric vehicle, 39% of dogs were more comfortable and 43% calmer in the electric car..

Electric car technology thinks of your dogs

Tesla is thinking of the drivers of its electric carsbut also their dogs. Since 2019, the carmaker has added a "dog mode" to all its vehicles. What does this mean? If you're traveling with your dog and need to run a few quick errands, you can leave your dog in complete safety. Simply activate dog mode, and the message "My master will be back soon" appears on the central display, along with the temperature inside the cabin. The air conditioning then kicks in to maintain the perfect temperature for the well-being of man's best friend. We hope this feature will one day be available on all electric car models!
