Who is BYD?

The brand's presence in Europe is still modest, but it is a leader in the automotive industry. As introduced in this article, the brand has achieved impressive figures over the last two years:

  • 2022: nearly 900,000 electric cars sold
  • 2021: nearly 600,000 vehicle sales, with the addition of nearly 1,700,000 plug-in hybrid models.

To talk about its history, BYD (Build Your Dreams) was founded in February 1995 in Shenzhen, China, by Wang Chuanfu.

The brand began by manufacturing lithium-ion batteries and has diversified over the years:

  • Via the automotive sector: market entry in 2003
  • Via rail transit: creation of SkyRail, a monorail system for example
  • Via renewable energy
  • Via electronics

BYD: what explains its leadership?

The company is first and foremost a battery manufacturer, where it is the market leader.

In fact, its batteries are built using a technology only available from BYD: the Blade battery . Rectangular and flat in shape, this technology has a number of advantageous features, including :

  • High safety: thanks to lithium-iron-phosphate, the raw material improves cooling efficiency and preheating performance
  • Extended range: by using the blade battery, the surface area is increased by more than 50%, unlike with conventional batteries. This ensures greater energy density and optimizes the vehicle's range.
  • Longer battery life: the Blade battery has over 5,000 charge/discharge cycles. This is well beyond conventional batteries, which cycle between 1,000 and 1,500 times, and have an average lifespan of around 10 years, according to many manufacturers.

The main BYD electric car models

BYD and Tesla: a duel or a collaboration?

Tesla and BYD are competitors on the market, since both car brands offer similar electric cars, both sedans and high-end SUVs.

However, there are a few nuances to consider. The American brand has chosen its competitor to supply BYD's Blade batteries and integrate them into their Tesla Model Y Rear-wheel drive. As we mentioned earlier, BYD has a wealth of know-how when it comes to electric batteries. These make their vehicles more efficient, as do those of their competitors.

Despite this collaboration, the Chinese brand wants to accelerate its position in the market and confront Tesla, in particular with numerous models such as the BYD Seal, a competitor to the Model 3.

For now, Tesla has managed to hold on to its number 1 position in the European electric vehicle market. Not least thanks to price cuts on its Model 3 and Model Y Propulsion at the beginning of 2023, to enable them to benefit from the ecological bonus. But many Chinese brands are arriving on the European market, and represent a real threat to the American automaker.

Conclusion

The year 2023 is off to a good start for the Chinese brand BYD, and its development is not about to stop, especially with all the new products planned.
