Self-employed professionals: reduce your business costs with an electric vehicle

Professional electric vehicle expenses

With the various measures put in place in France, Europe and around the world to reduce CO2 emissions, we're seeing many motorists making the energy transition. In fact, the French automotive market is in constant evolution between January and June 2023: Avere-France reports a 41.7% increase in registrations of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles compared with the 1st half of 2022.

With inflation on the rise, it's essential for professionals to take into account the business costs of an electric vehicle, by considering, for example, the the cost of recharging the vehicle while keeping cash flow under control.

As vehicles are an almost indispensable means of transport for the self-employed, no matter how often you travel, we are going to give you a few tips on how to reduce your business costs thanks to electric vehicles.

How much does an electric vehicle cost for a self-employed professional?

Before getting to the heart of the matter, let's take a look at the different costs involved in owning an electric vehicle. When you own a "clean" vehicle, the costs to be expected are as follows:

Mileage costs

Depending on the type of vehicle and engine, mileage rates have been defined by the tax authorities, and since 2021 a 20% increase in mileage allowances has been applied to electric vehicles.. This is a tax advantage. In 2022, this increase was raised to 10%.

Here's a table to help you calculate the mileage costs of an electric vehicle for business travel:

Administrative power (HP) Distance "d "* from 1 to 5,000 km Distance "d" from 5,001 to 20,000 km Distance "d" greater than 20,001 km
3 HP and less
d x 0.529
(d x 0.316) + 1,065
d x 0.370
4 CV
d x 0.606
(d x 0.340) + 1,330
d x 0.407
5 CV
d x 0.636
(d x 0.357) + 1,395
d x 0.427
6 CV
d x 0.665
(d x 0.374) + 1,457
d x 0.447
7 CV and more
d x 0.697
(d x 0.394) + 1,515
d x 0.470

*The unit (d) corresponds to the distance covered in kilometers.

For example, if 3,000 km were driven for business purposes in 2022 with a 5 HP vehicle, the service provider could claim actual expenses of €1,908 (3,000 km x 0.636).
