The range of electric cars available on the world market has expanded considerably in recent years. With the arrival of zero-emission models and ever-increasing pressure on the taxation of combustion-powered cars, the electric car is becoming an obvious choice.

But in the world of electric cars, it's not just the Kia Niro EV, the Renault Zoé or the Tesla Model 3 that are renowned for their high level ofautonomy. There are also sports cars, also known as hypercars or supercars.

Driving pleasure, power and electricity are no longer incompatible, even without the engine noise. It's now possible to enjoy a whole new electric driving experience, and I'm not the one saying so. And if the sports car was an electric car? After all, what do you expect from a sports car?

Sensations, acceleration and speed, all in a sporty look. Did you know that, thanks to its crankshaftless motor and single-speed gearbox, the electric car offers maximum torque immediately available, enabling it to accelerate very, very hard. Admittedly, with its batteries, it's 30% heavier than its internal combustion equivalent. But it's also more powerful!

For example, the Porsche Taycan Turbo S boasts 761 hp, while a 911 Turbo S can only release 560 and a Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Executive peaks at 680 hp.

And with the arrival of the 350-kilowatt Ionity supercharger, your electric sports car can be charged in just a few minutes. 

Does an electric sports car cost more than its internal combustion counterpart?

No surprises when it comes to price! An electric sports car is still a sports car, and therefore very expensive to buy. Only a select few will be able to afford a supercar for Christmas. 

Is electric the easiest way to get power?

Today, it's easier to get power from an electric supercar than from its internal combustion counterpart. The reason is simple, technically, it's much easier to combine several electric motors to increase power. In fact, the space/power ratio of an electric motor is much greater than that of a combustion engine, making it possible to accumulate several motors. The very first Mach-E concept, with 7 motors and 1400 hp, or the more sober e-tron S which has 3 (1 front, 2 rear).

The latest example is Mercedeswhich is struggling to develop the Mercedes-AMG Oneits hypercar powered by a Formula 1 engine. This is because gasoline engines require greater investment and compromise, depending on the car's intended use. It's also extremely difficult to assemble several of them, for reasons of space, cooling and transmissions.

When it comes to electric cars, this kind of construction game is much easier. After all, an electric motor needs no gearbox, and its volume is fairly compact. On high-performance models, manufacturers can combine them at will, to ensure all-wheel drive with no mechanical link, or to boost power.

Now that you know a little more about electric supercars! We've just compiled a ranking of the top 10 electric cars most powerful electric cars in the world. Are you interested?

Aspark Owl

With over 2,000 horsepower, the Aspark Owl, first unveiled to the public as a concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2017, is currently one of the most powerful cars in the world.

The Japanese sports car is equipped with four electric motors, enabling it to reach speeds of up to 400 km/h. However, you can expect to pay 2.9 million euros for one of the 50 examples produced in collaboration with Manifattura Automobili TorinoFirst deliveries are scheduled for the second quarter of 2020.

Cars capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in under 3 seconds can be counted on the fingers of one hand. The Bugatti Chironfor example, reaches this speed in 2.5 seconds, while theAgera RS achieves it in 2.8 seconds. But both of these cars have combustion engines, and it's the electrics that we're looking at, with the Aspark OWL achieving record acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 1.9 seconds.

Lotus Evija

Lotus is best known for its ultra-light sports cars, which boast a formidable power-to-weight ratio for top-level efficiency on the track. Lotus has also been known in the past for certain GT models, such as theEspritpopularized by James Bond and Richard Gere in Pretty Woman. Motorsport enthusiasts are also familiar with Colin Chapman's Colin Chapman's brand for its Formula 1 successes.. But now, the Lotus name rhymes with electricity!

Since China's Geely bought the small British carmaker, the brand has been moving towards electric technology and supercars. Last year, Lotus presented the Evija, a new sports car with a vertiginous technical specification. With a powertrain comprising a total of four electric motors, the machine develops 2,000 round horsepower and an absolutely Herculean 1,700 nm of theoretical torque.

It will accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in less than three seconds, and perhaps even under two seconds. Top speed, however, will be limited to 320 km/h, in order to conserve the 70 kWh batteries.

Lotus has already announced that production of the Evija, scheduled for 2020, has been fully sold out. However, the manufacturer does not specify the number of units sold, nor the planned production for this year. But if you want to buy one of these machines costing over two million euros, you'll have to wait until at least next year.

Lotus Evija

Pininfarina Battista

Pininfarina is no longer just a coachbuilder, the Italian firm now wants to become a genuine brand. Its first model, the Battista, marks a new era for the brand, whose technical specifications are enough to make a Bugatti Chiron green with envy.

In fact, this car is named after the founder of the Italian firm, and 150 examples will be produced. With its four electric motors, this coupé boasts over 1,900 hp! Enough to rival a Bugatti Chiron with its 1,500 hp.

With a 0 to 100 km/h time of less than 2 seconds, a 0 to 300 km/h time of less than 12 seconds and a top speed of over 350 km/h. The performance of this Pininfarina Battista is unprecedented, despite its considerable weight.

Nio EP9

Chinese startup NextEV which specializes in electric cars, took part in the electric minivan championship Formula E electric minivan championship, and following this experience, the automaker decided to translate its accumulated experience in this discipline onto the road. The result in 2016 is the NIO EP9, the Chinese brand's first electric supercar to be introduced in London.

The Nio EP9 is officially limited to 16 units, with a base unit price of around 1.4 million euros.

The supercar boasts 1 megawatt of firepower, similar to that offered by a Koenigsegg Agera One 1. The four electric motors, accompanied by four gearboxes, also deliver 1,480 Nm of torque.

This enables it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.7 seconds, 0 to 200 km/h in 7.1 seconds and reach a top speed of 313 km/h. Aided by a maximum aerodynamic downforce of 24,000 Newtons at 240 km/h, and a lateral grip of up to 2.53 G, the supercar is particularly at ease on the racetrack.

Rimac C-Two

Despite an entry price of €1.7 million and the possibility of increasing the price to €2.2 million with options. The 150 examples of the C-Two electric supercar from Croatian Rimacexhibited at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, were immediately sold out.

The C-Two is powered by four electric motors developing no less than 1,915 hp and maximum torque of 2,300 Nm.

What's more, Rimac's supercar can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 1.85 seconds, for a top speed of over 400 km/h. Powered by a 120 kWh battery, the vehicle can travel up to 650 km on a single charge. The car also features a carbon-fiber monocoque and a carbon sub-frame, limiting weight to 1950 kg.

Faraday FF 91

Revealed in early 2017 at CES in Las Vegasthe FF 91 is Faraday Future's first electric car.

The Faraday FF 91 is powered by a 100% electric powertrain capable of delivering up to 1050 horsepower. Its architecture is based on the VPA (Variable Platform Architecture) platform presented by the automaker in early 2016 on the FF Zero concept1. In terms of performance, Faraday Future has announced a 0 to 100 km/h time of 2.39 seconds.

Tesla Roadster

The Tesla Model S Performance already delivers impressive acceleration. But we'll have to wait until 2022 to discover the Californian manufacturer's first real supercar, the second-generation Roadster. On paper, this machine has everything it takes to beat a Bugatti Chiron: it will accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in two seconds and reach a top speed of 400 km/h.

Towards 0 to 100 km/h in just one second? Well, according to Elon Musk himself, the rocket system will enable the car to propel itself from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) much faster. Slave Popovski estimates that, with the rockets, the car will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 1.1 seconds. This should give a 0 to 100 km/h in 1.2 or 1.3 seconds. His virtual model shows this terrifying acceleration on video.. Rendezvous now in 2022 to see just how far Tesla can go in terms of acceleration!

The Tesla Roadster is now available for reservation, starting at €172,000, with a €43,000 deposit to ensure delivery of the vehicle as soon as it's released.

LUCID MOTORS AIR

After North America, Lucid opens pre-orders for the Air in several European countries, including France. This suggests that marketing of the luxurious electric sedan, the Californian manufacturer's first vehicle, is finally on track. According to the company, the opening of reservations on the Old Continent was scheduled for 2021, but high demand prompted it to accelerate the move.

To pre-order an Air in France, a refundable deposit of €900 is required. The other European countries chosen to be the first to welcome the Air are Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Monaco, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Lucid says it has selected these markets for their charging infrastructure and commercial demand.

The Lucid Air's equipment and pricing remain to be announced, as do its final specifications. During development, the manufacturer announced a top-of-the-range version with 1,000 hp, a top speed of 320 km/h and a range of over 640 km.

Genovation GXE

The Genovation GXE is an unprecedented supercar powered by an electric motor that is none other than a Chevrolet Corvettewhose V8 has been swapped for two electric motors. The Genovation GXE develops a whopping 800 hp. In other unexpected news, it is available with a manual gearbox, which is highly unusual for an electric car.

This electric Corvette breaks all codes. The V8 engine that has made its reputation for many years has been replaced by two electric motors capable of sending over 800 horsepower to the rear wheels, with a phenomenal torque of 950 Nm. Enough to make anyone's hair stand on end!

Porsche Taycan

The Porsche Taycan is the automaker's first electric car. Available from €181,152 in its fastest Turbo S trim, the Taycan also has an entry-level trim from €108,632.

Available in three trim levels: 4S, Turbo and Turbo S. It develops up to 761 hp and 1,050 Nm of torque in the Turbo S trim. This trim also offers an overboost function to maximize performance on the road.

Thanks to this feature, the Taycan Turbo S can easily accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.8 seconds.

In terms of range, the manufacturer has announced a maximum range of 412 km for the Turbo S version. In addition, a top speed of 260 km/h is available, while maintaining the promised range.

Lagonda All-Terrain Concept

Presented at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, the concept car called Lagonda All-Terrain Concept is sure to be the talk of the town for years to come!

This concept SUV of the future was conceived as "a first glimpse of the first production model" from Lagonda. It is intended to inspire future Lagonda luxury vehicles, scheduled to go into production in 2022. While the Lagonda All-Terrain Concept is fully electric, no information has been released on the technical characteristics of its powertrain.

Indeed, Aston Martin preferred to focus on the interior of this Lagonda All-Terrain Concept during the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, rather than evoke its specifics. Crafted with soft, noble materials (cashmere, ceramic, silk...), the concept's cabin lets us imagine what luxury in the future might be like. Inspired by the world of yachts, the Lagonda All-Terrain Concept dominates the road. It offers four separate seats. The two front seats can swivel to face the rear passengers in autonomous driving mode.

As for the center console, it's fully touch-sensitive and within easy reach of the driver and front passenger. A screen has also been integrated into the steering wheel to display key driving information. Another special feature of the Lagonda All-Terrain Concept: the key takes the form of a disc that levitates thanks to electromagnets when the SUV is being driven. All in all, a promising electric car, and we'll just have to wait and see.
