The 2024 ecological bonus: a boost for electric cars

December 15, 2023, the French government announced the renewal of the ecological bonus in 2024. This bonus, which is granted under certain conditions, reduces the purchase price of an electric vehicle.

What are the changes to the ecological bonus in 2024?

  • Minimum environmental score

Although the 2.4-tonne limit is often cited as a criterion for assessing the environmental impact of vehicles, it may prove insufficient to truly reflect the totalcarbon footprint

Indeed, the provenance of electric vehicles and the environmentally unfriendly manufacturing processes in China, combined with the energy-intensive means of transporting these vehicles to Europe, can considerably compromise their green credentials.

The environmental score, a key element in this equation, takes a holistic approach by considering all phases of the electric vehicle's life cycle, from the production of metals and materials, including batteries, to assembly and shipping.

In this way, the introduction of a minimum environmental score acts as a catalyst to promote "made in Europe", although this may be interpreted more as a consequence than an initial condition.

It is important to note that to be eligible for the ecological bonus, a vehicle must obtain a score of at least 60 points out of 80 according to this environmental calculation methodology. This reinforces the importance of considering the entire production and delivery process when assessing the carbon footprint of an electric vehicle.

Ecological bonus 2024

The decree specifying the amounts of aid for the purchase of low-polluting vehicles was published on February 13, 2024. The ecological bonus has been reduced to 4,000 euros. It has been abolished for companies.

  • The government has confirmed a reduction in the amount of the ecological bonus for some French people, particularly households in the five highest income deciles.
  • Reduction in assistance for the purchase of new electric cars: from €5,000 to €4,000 for these taxpayers.
  • For less well-off households, the bonus remains unchanged at €7,000.
  • Change in reference tax income per unit from €14,089 to €15,400, used as a criterion of distinction.

Professionals

  • Abolition of the ecological bonus for new passenger cars by legal entities.
  • 1,000 reduction on all electric van bonuses, whether for private individuals or corporate bodies.
  • The new rules come into force on February 14, the day after publication of the decree.
