Electric cars in Marseille

How can I buy an electric car in Marseille? What assistance are you entitled to? How do you charge up? We've summed it all up for you in this article.

Like all major French cities, the Aix Marseille Provence metropolis has announced the perimeter of its ZFE (low-emission zone), which covers 19 km² in the heart of Marseille and is bounded by the Prado, Rabatau, Jarret and Plombières areas, as well as the Euromed zone. The city is therefore keen to develop the use of electric cars. The city of Marseille is committed to promoting low-pollution urban mobility, and intends to ban diesel vehicles by 2026 and petrol vehicles in the longer term. The electric car, which emits no CO2 or noise pollution, is often favored by metropolises.

You can also benefit from the "prime à la conversion" (conversion bonus) of up to €5,000, depending on your household income. The conversion bonus is government assistance for all French people to buy a new, less-polluting diesel, petrol, electric or rechargeable hybrid vehicle, whether used or new.

Martine Vassal, President of the Métropole Aix-Marseille-Provence, announced the news: "This is a subject we've given a lot of thought to. We're going to introduce a €5,000 subsidy for the purchase of an electric vehicle foranyone living in the EPZ, or for professionals domiciled in the zone.

The Aix-Marseille Provence Metropolis is offering a 5,000 euro subsidy to be applied in 2024 for the purchase of an electric car for residents and professionals in the Low Emission Mobility Zone (ZFE).

How do I recharge my electric car in Marseille?

There are several options for recharging your electric car in Marseille, depending on your situation.

Charging at public charging stations in Marseille

The metropolis also plans to deploy over 275 public fast-charging stations by 2021. These charging stations will be deployed as a priority in city centers, tourist spots and shops. Accepted sockets include T2, CHAdeMO and COMBO.

  • Domestic outlets for normal recharging
  • The type 2 (T2) socket is the European standard for normal (up to 7 kW), accelerated (up to 22 kW) and rapid (up to 43 kW) recharging, depending on the electric vehicle model.
  • Combo and Chademo sockets for rapid recharging, up to 50 kW

The easiest way to access these charging stations is via the Larecharge service. The network guarantees that all residents of the Metropole can recharge their batteries quickly and at a reduced rate. It is compatible with the national network for long-distance travel. You'll need to create a customer account.
