The famous Italian automaker Maserati is back in full force this autumn 2022, with the announcement of an all-new historic model, the GranTurismo Folgore, the very first electric vehicle model launched by the brand.

For this first electric baptism, Maserati has opted for innovation, offering a true electric sports coupé for which performance and power are the watchwords.

What we know about the electric GranTurismo Folgore

For the moment, while Maserati' s new electric coupe has only just been announced to the general public, we'll have to wait a little longer for its official launch, scheduled for some time in 2023.

In the meantime, we've already had a chance to take a look at the various features and specifications of the electric vehicle, already shared by the manufacturer itself.

The result is an electric coupé with an innovative, sporty look, justified by its performance and power - unprecedented for an electric vehicle.

The electric Maserati Folgore is powered by 3 300kW permanent magnet motors, derived from Formula E. For this GranTurismo Folgore, 800V technology has been chosen to ensure faster, optimal recharging and thus meet performance expectations.

Features of the new electric Maserati

Speed

In terms of speed, the 100%-electric Italian coupé is capable of swallowing 0 to 100 km in 2.7 seconds, a far superior score compared to the performance offered by internal combustion models, which require 3.5 seconds for the same exercise. What's more, the GranTurismo Folgore will take just 8.8 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 200 km/h.

In terms of top speed, the electric version of the GranTurismo impresses once again, with a top speed of 320 km/h in certain driving modes.

The battery

The GranTurismo Folgore features a T-Bone battery with a capacity of 92.5 kWh, 83 kWh of which is usable. Maserati chose an H-shaped "T-Bone" battery to best adapt to the vehicle's curves, allowing it to maintain the low center of gravity characteristic of the coupe model.

As for fuel consumption, the manufacturer has yet to provide any information on the subject, but it's likely that the sports coupe will be relatively demanding in terms of fuel consumption in order to deliver the promised performance.

The refill

When it comes to recharging, the GranTurismo can be recharged on ultra-fast charging stations, with up to 270 kW of DC power.
It can also be recharged up to 22 kW on AC charging stations.

The style

The vehicle's structure combines aluminum, magnesium and high-performance steel. The brand's objective was to keep the vehicle's weight in check, in order to meet the standards of the coupé model. Nevertheless, the GranTurismo Folgore still weighs in at 2.26 tons. The layout and choice of batteries were also designed to respect the specific characteristics of the sports coupé, reducing vehicle height and optimizing weight distribution and the vehicle's center of gravity.

Certain aspects, both technical and stylistic, remain to be seen, however, as the vehicle's interior has yet to be fully revealed.

The price

The price of the GranTurismo Folgore also remains a mystery for the time being. Nevertheless, it should exceed €200,000 for this electric Maserati.

Maserati's electric ambitions

This first electric model will not be Maserati' s last attempt in this area. In fact, the automaker has big plans for electric vehicles and even aspires to electrify its entire catalog by 2030. Other electric versions are already planned, such as the Grecale Folgore SUV and the GranCabrio.

The brand's ambitions in terms of electric vehicles are in line with the regulations announced by the French government(Loi LOM), and in particular with the announcement of the gradual disappearance of combustion-powered vehicles by 2035. For more information on the regulatory context, see our article on the Loi d'Orientation des Mobilités.

In addition, Maserati' s move towards electric vehicles symbolizes the brand's desire to breathe new life into its image by positioning itself as a more sustainable and environmentally conscious brand.

Rest assured, the GranTurismo Folgore, also known as "the world's first electric luxury sports car", promises a fine lineage behind it...
