Electric cars: this year in review

This year has seen significant progress in the electric vehicle sector, with innovations and developments that promise to transform the way we drive.

How is market share evolving?

The market share of electric cars, including electric SUVs, has grown impressively. In Europe, over 281,000 electric cars were registered in September 2023, marking a 26% increase on 2022.

More locally, in France for example, in the first half of 2023, 138,077 electric cars were registered in the first half of 2023, compared with 93,344 in 2022 (an increase in market share from 12.1% to 15.5%).

What do the various manufacturers have to offer?

All the major brands of electric vehicles now offer an electric electric SUV increasingly innovative. Tesla, Volkswagen, Hyundai, BMW or Audi to name but a few, have established themselves comfortably in this sector.

They even offer several vehicle categories in their range (sedans, city cars, compacts). Some manufacturers, such as Renault have even adapted to the needs of professionals, offering them different versions of electric vans.

What is the average price of an electric car?

The average price today is 45 000 €. An electric car is more expensive than a combustion-powered car, as it is equipped with the very latest technology, with prices ranging from from €20,000 up to €90,000.

In addition, they allow the purchaser to benefit from certain advantages (environmental bonus, conversion bonus, regional aid). Despite their higher price, electric vehicles offer long-term savings, especially on fuel and maintenance costs. For example, the Peugeot 208 consumes 4.1 l/100 km. A liter costs around €2, which comes to 8,2 € for 100 km. The kWh is around €0.20. A Peugeot e-208, over the same distance, consumes 32.5 kWh (a cost of 6,5 €).

Electric vehicles require less maintenance, on average 30% less.

What can we expect next?

Electric SUVs have a bright future ahead of them, and for good reason:range, performance and on-board technology are constantly improving. For example, it's no longer unusual to see electric cars with a range in excess of 500 km, such as the BMW I4 M50 . Manufacturers know how to adapt perfectly to demand, and meet it on time.

In the coming years, we can therefore expect to see an improvement in range, a reduction in the cost of electric cars, the development of recharging infrastructures and a proliferation of technological innovations. Governments will also be stepping up their environmental policies to continue raising ecological awareness.
