Reinforced socket in Norway: the future of bollards?

reinforced socket Norway

The NAF (Norway Automobile Federation) supported by the NEK (Norwegian Electrotechnical Committee) have decided to ban the use of reinforced plugs for home charging of electric cars. This decision is motivated by safety concerns.

Now, the only way to recharge your electric vehicle in Norway is to install a charging station. This is yet another step in the democratization of charging stations in Norway, as the country was reported to be massively replacing its petrol stations with charging stations. However, it's a blow to the country's smaller pockets, given that a charging station is more expensive to install than a reinforced socket. So why take this decision, knowing that it would be a hardship for Norwegians with the least means? Let's find out.

Charging stations more in the spotlight than ever

As one of NAF's charging station experts, Jan Tore Gjøby, puts it, a well-installed charging station is much more suitable for electric vehicle charging.. Indeed, given that its primary mission is electric vehicle charging, it brings together the technologies and standards suited to this.

A bollard placed outdoors must meet IK08 and IP55 standards to ensure minimum resistance to shocks and bad weather. But that's not all: in Norway, many people have witnessed recharging under excessive heat emitted by the reinforced socket, which has also heated up the electrical system.

It didn't cause a fire, but it did motivate NAF and NEK representatives to take the necessary steps before it happened. With a charging station that complies with standards and has no manufacturing defects, this kind of situation cannot arise, as the station automatically shuts down when subjected to harsh and dangerous conditions. Charging stations are also more resistant to high power loads. Charging stations with load shedding regulate themselves so as not to exceed the available power transmitted by the meter. So there's no need to blow a fuse.

These high safety requirements are reinforced by the fact that most electric vehicles are recharged at night, when everyone else is asleep. I don't need to spell it out for you: if a fire breaks out at this time, the damage can be extensive.

Would you like to install a charging station?

What are the advantages of home charging stations over reinforced sockets?

In addition to the safety needs we've already discussed, charging stations are also more advantageous from a practical point of view! They provide a whole host of extra features compared with reinforced sockets.

Considerable power gains

Charging stations transmit higher charging power than the reinforced plugs available on the market. A reinforced plug can transmit a maximum of 3.7 kW, depending on the model, which means you can recharge your electric car in just under a day. All charging stations, on the other hand, deliver at least 7.4 kW, depending on the power available, so you're guaranteed a full charge in just one night's sleep.

The advantages of connected charging stations

A charging station can be connectedunlike any other type of reinforced socket. The connectivity of charging stations can give you many advantages and functionalities.

For example, you can schedule your recharging periods to take advantage of off-peak times to cut costs.

But that's not all! You can also :

  • monitor your terminal's consumption (speed, duration and charging power) for information purposes
  • monitor the status of your terminal remotely
  • activate or deactivate the remote charging station

We've also put together a top 10 list of charging stations, so don't hesitate to check it out to get a better idea of a charging station's capabilities.

Install a charging station to benefit from financial advantages

When you install a charging station, you're entitled to a whole host of government grants! This is in line with the government's trend to develop and promote the switch to electric vehicles in the car fleet fleet.

Advenir help

The ADVENIR program rewards the installation of charging stations. It is aimed particularly at professionals, but can also subsidize private individuals in certain cases. The program is primarily aimed at professionals wishing to install charging stations in their parking lots, whether for private or public use. It is also available to private individuals, but only in the case of condominiums.

ADVENIR supports initiatives to decarbonize mobility by using the CEE (Certificat d'Economie d'Energie) mechanism and ongoing public subsidies to support electromobility. In other words, ADVENIR uses incentives to finance the deployment of recharging infrastructures. It is one of the main schemes for financing electric vehicle charging infrastructures in France.

The French Ministry of Ecological Transition had set itself the ambitious target of reaching 100,000 charging charging stations installed by October 2020, and subsidies for the installation of charging stations were increased accordingly. The operation was supposed to be valid for all charging stations open to the public installed between November 2, 2020 and October 31, 2021. Now, with the extension of this aid, ADVENIR aims to install almost 65,000 new charging points. To achieve this, an additional budget of 20 million euros has been earmarked for the project.

Energy transition tax credit

Visit tax credit for the energy transition is a tax credit that allows you to finance, in part, the installation of your charging station.

It was set up with the help of MaPrimeRenov'to replace the CITE (Crédit d'Impôt à la transition écologique).

If you live alone, you can claim the credit for just one charging system per dwelling. In this case, you can benefit from a maximum tax credit of €300, with one system installed in your main residence and another in your second home.

If you live as a couple with a joint tax return, you can be allocated two load systems. In this way, these 2 load systems can be applied to their main home and 2 others to their secondary home. If you are a married couple, the tax credit can be up to €1,200, if you install two charging systems per home.

It's important to note that the tax authorities can take back the tax credit you received if you were reimbursed for the installation of the charging station within five years of its installation. However, the tax credit will not be refunded if the reimbursement is the result of a claim.

We detail the conditions for accessing this aid in our article Support for the installation of charging stations, don't hesitate to consult it.
