Hyundai goes 100% electric on the Norwegian car market

Hyundai Ioniq 6

In 2022, the electric car market is enjoying dazzling success with consumers, who now see only electric cars. In fact, the market share of electric car registrations is 83.7%. in January 2022, according to a press release fromØyvind Solberg Thorsen (President of OFV, Norway). What's more, when we look at the top-selling cars in Norway in January 2022, 19 out of 20 are electric.

As for the little intruder, it's a hybrid car all the same. So Norway and its people are already well and truly committed to the ecological transition towards greener mobility. What's more, the European Union has decided the end of new combustion-powered vehicles by 2035so that by 2050, no combustion-powered cars will be on the road.

  • The maturity of the electric car market
  • The maturity of charging infrastructures
  • Total cost of ownership (TCO) of electric cars

Points are awarded for each criterion, resulting in a ranking showing the most mature countries in terms of the electric car ecosystem. electric car ecosystem. Here are the top 3 in this 2022 report:

The Norway topped the lists for another year, and even became the first country in the world to have a 20% market share of electric cars on the road. Ever more ambitious, the Scandinavian country wants to ban combustion-powered vehicles, so that all new cars sold in 2025 will be zero-emission vehicles (electric or hydrogen). A ban that is not deemed necessary, since the market share of fossil-fuel cars is naturally declining.

France ranks a distant 11th, showing that we still have a long way to go in terms of the maturity of our electric car market.

Hyundai supports this ecological transition

The Korean manufacturer turns a corner for its brand, but also for the Norwegian market. Hyundai had already stopped selling combustion-powered vehicles two years ago, but from January 1, 2023, the brand will no longer sell hybrids or plug-in hybrids.. In Norway, Hyundai's range of electric cars will therefore comprise theHyundai Kona Electric, l'Hyundai Ioniq 6 and theHyundai Ioniq 5. The latter is also the ninth best-selling electric car in 2022 with 4,000 vehicles, in Norway..

Why this decision? Quite simply to keep up with demand. In 2021, of the 25,000 cars sold by Hyundai in Norway, 92% were electric cars. We can therefore deduce that Norwegians drive electric cars because they want to participate in the country's ecological transition, with the aim of reducing CO2 emissions from cars.

What's more, as you know, winter can be harsher in the Nordic countries. However, Hyundai is asserting its position and making it clear that its electric cars, such as the Kona SUV or Ioniq 5 can withstand the cold and their everyday usefulness.

Brands follow suit

Volkswagen also intends to to offer only electric cars in Norway from January 1, 2024.. Like Hyundai, it's the behavior of buyers that has prompted this decision. At the beginning of 2022, of the 8,500 passenger cars sold by Volkswagen, 6,900 were electric.. It's also worth noting that the Volkswagen ID.4 was the second best-selling electric car in July 2022, with 4,960 sales since January 2022. We can expect other automakers to follow suit well before the ban date for combustion-powered vehicles.
